Listen to enough of the bloviation, and you'll start to believe that full-size, traditional SUVs are the root of all evil. While the hue and cry has gone up far and wide branding these truck-based vehicles as four-wheeled carcinogens, there are enough legitimate reasons to purchase a Chevrolet Suburban or Cadillac Escalade that General Motors is going ahead with the next generation.

SUVs have traditionally been healthy profit-earners for General Motors. Though sales dropped by 25 percent in 2009, sales are picking up once again and exports remain strong, all making a good case for the revamping and keeping the truck chassis. Work had been idled on the GMT900 architecture's replacement while GM went through its bout with Chapter 11 and fuel prices spiked. Moving the Tahoe, Escalade, Yukon, and Suburban to a version of the unibody Lambda platform had also reportedly been considered. In the end, buyers opting for the big SUVs really want and need what they do; from three rows of seats to truck-strong towing and heavy-duty four-wheel-drive systems, so General Motors is apparently keeping the basic formula, confirming to Automotive News that all current versions of GMT900 have a future. The fact that GM SUVs are practically ubiquitous as congressional transporters probably doesn't hurt the case for revamping the full-size SUV line, either. After all, Capitol Hill has a massive stake in GM, and they might as well get some new armored Escalades for politicians publicly stumping for small, fuel-efficient cars, right?

Chicago 2010: GM uses clear plastic to illustrate direct injection PDF Print E-mail

Cutaway engine displays at Chicago Auto Show - Click above for high-res image gallery

Automakers have long grappled with a way to showcase exciting new technology in an interesting and informative yet still simple-to-understand way. One traditional method that's been used for years for this purpose is to hire an artist skilled enough to draw complex cutaway illustrations that show the inner-workings of cars, trucks, engines, transmissions and the like in two dimensions.

Nowadays, though, we're a busy bunch with little time to dissect technical illustrations, so it's always better to grab our attention with a real-life display can be stared at in all three dimensions. For proof, check out these cool displays that Chevrolet and GMC are currently showing off at the Chicago Auto Show. Ostensibly to explain how direct injection benefits an engine's power and fuel efficiency, we have a feeling these units were assembled just because they look so darn cool.

See for yourself in our high-res gallery of live images below. Note how the colors change to demonstrate the different cycles of a four-stroke engine.

GM announces B20 compatibility for 2011 Duramax 6.6l turbo diesel engine PDF Print E-mail

The move to official automaker support for higher blends of biodiesel has been a slow one. One important step along the way were the establishment of American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards for B20 (20 percent biodiesel mixed with 80 percent petro diesel) in the middle of 2008. Last year, General Motors announced that the new 6.6-liter Duramax V8 engine would be factory certified to run on B20 sometime this spring. That time is now.

GM officially announced today at the National Biodiesel Conference that the 2011 Duramax 6.6l turbo diesel engine will be able to accept B20 (more details here). This engine will be used in the 2011 Chevy Silverado, the GMC Sierra heavy-duty pickups, the Chevrolet Express and the GMC Savana full-size vans. The Silverado will be unveiled this week at the Chicago Auto Show, so stay tuned for more from the Windy City.

Scott Brown and his 2005 GMC Canyon pickup - Click above to watch the video after the break

Never underestimate the power of a celebrity endorsement. Or, for that matter, a political one. Massachusetts senator-elect Scott Brown (R) won an unprecedented victory Tuesday in the state's special election to replace Ted Kennedy, and he reportedly earned extra brownie points from voters for promising to keep his staid 2005 GMC Canyon pickup truck with over 200,000 miles on the clock as his daily driver in office.

"I'm Scott Brown, I'm from Wrentham, and I drive a truck," the candidate had been known to say. This was especially true after President Obama quipped that voters should "look under the hood" in reference to Brown's candidacy. Apparently, that nice, average guy persona sat well with the state's population - so much so that area dealerships are reportedly noting an increased level of interest in the oft-overlooked pickup truck from The General.

Al Cerrone, owner of a local GMC dealership, claims, "We've gotten eight to 12 phone calls from people asking, 'Do you sell trucks like that?''' To which we can only imagine he responded with, "Yes we can!" Click past the break to watch a video from Scott Brown's campaign featuring his GMC Canyon pickup truck. Thanks for the tip, Phil!
